The college held a blood donor clinic March 29 marking the end of a successful school term of blood donations.
Charge nurse Charlene Galarneau said that donation clinics at Algonquin have always been very well received by students and this year’s high turnout was proof of that.“We have quite a number of students who enquire as they pass by,” said Galarneau. “You always get a lot more people when you come to them in their environment.”Students who participated in the final clinic ranged from frequent donators like Galarneau, who has donated 22 times herself, to nervous first timers. Each of these donators had their own personal reasons for deciding to donate.Brendan Mcglouchlin, a first year general arts student, is a third time donor and said his reason for donating is partly due to his rare blood type.“When I found out my blood type was O positive I found out that 37 per cent of the population is compatible with my blood including anyone who has another O type,” Mcglouchlin said. For theatre arts student Michelle Leblanc, her reason was simply due to a friend encouraging her to donate.“My friend convinced me to come,” she said. “This is my second time donating.”Grant Fulton, a fitness health and promotions student, started donating blood on his own time and has since donated a total of nine times. “I just kinda started doing it and just kept it up,” said Fulton. Blood donor clinics will resume at the college in September, but in the meantime, students interested in donating can contact the Canadian Blood Services to find a clinic in their area. |
