The foyer of H building was literally packed with the sights, smells, and tastes of 10 different countries April 13, as students and judges alike sampled worldly dishes in an International Food Fair Competition.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism presented its annual International Food Fair Competition. The competition is the product of almost 80 of Scott Warrick’s international cuisine second year students.

In the final two weeks of the course students  form groups, select one of their guest speaker’s countries, and “present some food that is indigenous to that country,” according to Scott Warrick, professor of culinary skills at Algonquin

Ron Eade, Ottawa Citizen food editor, was present as a judge this year after attending numerous competitions at Algonquin in past years.

“It’s interesting to see the variety, not only in the tastes in textures but, generally, their approach to various world cuisines,” said Eade. “It’s unfortunate that they didn’t have a little bit more space to move around in though.”

The Philippines table was definitely a crowd favourite, serving colourful dishes like aracha, buko pandan, sisig, and pork tocino, and at the end of the day took home first place. Winners of the competition were Phoebe Oviedo and Kriztine Rubianes, who ran the Philippines table.
